Why Green Beauty?

I think it’s a great step forward when an event as big as Fashion Week starts giving green beauty products the spotlight. Used to be that companies were willing to sacrifice anything-including health-for a certain look, but this event shows that even in the echelons of the top fashion artists, the idea of beauty products that are beneficial, not harmful, is gaining ground.

We’ve all learned over the last decade or so that many of our common cosmetics, including lipstick, body and bath products, and anti-aging products, contain potentially dangerous chemicals likned to cancer, asthma, reproductive problems, hormone disruption, skin irritation, dermatitis, and more.

A 2007 study, for instance, by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC), found that many name-brand lipsticks contained lead. A 2009 study by the FDA also found lead in all lipsticks tested at levels up to 3.06 parts per million. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that lead is toxic and can cause brain and kidney damage.

Nail polish has been found to contain three harmful chemicals, including dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde, and toluene. These have been linked to headaches, dizziness, cancer, and reproductive problems. Fortunately, because of the efforts of the CSC, OPI has removed all three, as have Sally Hansen and Orly.

Bath products often contain the carcinogens 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde, which are by-products of the manufacturing process and not listed on the ingredient labels. Fragrances contain hundreds of unknown chemicals, as companies are not required to list them. Yet these chemicals have been listed to allergic reactions and skin sensitization, and can cause rashes, inflammation, and breakouts.

It’s Time for Green Beauty

With Fashion Week getting on board with green beauty, we can be sure that our voices are being heard, and we’ll be seeing even more safe, nourishing products on the market. Meanwhile, continue to use your voices for change by purchasing only from those companies that are being cautious about what they’re putting in their formulas. For more information, see my post on “Where to Shop for Safer Products,” and come see me on September 4th, 2013!
