Wow Sara, I'm sorry to hear about your unfortunate camping trip with with a sunscreen meant for babies! Imagine the reaction babies would have! Let me know which one you decided to try out. Soleo organics makes a great non-toxic sunscreen and I just tried out one by Sun Umbra and loved it as it also moisturizes the skin. Thanks for commenting! - Britta

I went on a camping trip in very hot weather last week, and being very light-skinned, I thought I was doing the right thing by my skin using a 50 sunscreen for babies (Bananaboat). Not so! A couple of days after the 4-day trip, my eyes were puffy, my face was red, and my arms were pink and slightly bumpy-feeling where I had used the stuff. Nothing but chemical free for me from now on.

HI Paola,

Though avobenzone is currently considered one of the safer chemical sunscreens, preliminary studies on it have created some concern. It has proven unstable when exposed to sunlight, and has shown to generate damaging free radicals when exposed to UV rays. It can also cause skin irritation and has shown in laboratory tests to have cancer-causing effects. (Look at these two references http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18673327 and http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ingredient.php?ingred06=700596) Since cancer fighters have increased photosensitivity due to treatments, we recommend they choose the safest option possible, which according to current research is titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Best, Britta

Thank you for sharing this information Michelle. I agree that nano is dangerous. The EU recently banned it from cosmetics in Europe a few months ago... But no the U.S. What is the product that you are using now? I'd love to try it as well. Thanks so much for commenting! - Britta

Thanks for sharing this story. I totally agree with Michelle. Opt for non-nano sized zinc oxide. The EWG offers great options: http://www.ewg.org/cosmetics/report/sunscreen09/findyoursunscreen?ptype=moisturizer

You mention zinc oxide is the safest; however only if it is NOT made with nano technology. Nano is dangerous. I was using Blue Lizard, zinc oxide, and found out it's made with nano, threw it in the trash. I now have a product which does not use it. I called the manufacturer to double check.
